Art gallery hosts work from photographer Mike Conti

Jigsaw puzzle pieces fit together. Some show greenery, some show an industrial landscape, and some show two women on an Arctic island beach.

On March 6th, the Mat-Su College art department opened its gallery with a show devoted to the photography of Mike Conti.

Using his uncultured eyes and our clumsy vocabulary, this author can only say that the work on display juxtaposes the natural world with humanity. Each piece begins as a collage that combines Conti's photos nature, humans, and the products of human activity. (These elements often intersect abruptly.) These collage-photos are then printed out as literal jigsaw puzzles. This format only further heightens the juxtaposition of nature with humans.

In addition to being a working artist, Conti is also a professor of art the University of Alaska Anchorage. You can find examples of his work at his website or at the Mat-Su College art gallery (FSM 200). The art gallery displays his work until March 15.

Beginning on March 20, the gallery will host Rarified Light, a traveling exhibit of photography. Watch the Monitor website for coverage of that event when it happens!
